Medical Library
A Medical Education Program Second To None In The West
The Pacific Hospital of Long Beach Medical Library provides over 100 journals and over 800 books. Current editions of standard medical textbooks are located in a REFERENCE section. Other books are shelved in the library.
Books are classified according to the National Library of Medicine classification system; Copies of the classification scheme are posted throughout the book collection. Current issues of the journals are located as you enter the library, in alphabetical order. The library keeps the last ten years of most titles, which are located starting at the end of the current journals and are arranged in alphabetical order, by title, volume and issue. OMT books are part of the reference collection.
The library also provides access to a web-based resource of clinical information, including full-text access to over 45 journals and over 35 standard medical textbooks.
Books not marked REFERENCE may be checked out for a period of 3 weeks or until the Wednesday before the end of your rotation (whichever comes first). To checkout library material, sign the card in the book, print your last name, and give the card to the librarian or put it in the BOOK RETURN slot located next to the librarian's office. Library material also may be returned through the slot. Reference books and all journals may only be used in the library.
There are no fines for overdue materials. If the borrower does not respond to 2 overdue notices and further personal contact, the borrower will be billed for the cost of replacing the materials plus a $10 service fee to cover purchase and cataloging costs. If medical students finish their rotation owing materials to the library, the final evaluation will not be released and the account will be turned over to their college for collection.
There is a photocopy machine located in the library, which collates and staples, and can be used to make multiple copies or transparencies for presentations. Please ask the librarian or medical education staff for assistance.
The librarian is available to assist with literature searches, to help locate materials not in our collection, and to consult about effective ways to search the literature and the Internet.
