SCOPE OF EDUCATION

Internal medicine is the discipline encompassing the study and practice of health promotion, disease prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of men and women during times of health a through all stages of acute and chronic illness. Intrinsic of the discipline are the application of the scientific method of problem solving, decision-making, and an attitude of caring driven by humanistic and professional values.

The practice of internal medicine requires comprehensive knowledge of human biology, behavior, and spirit; an understanding of the epidemiology and pathophysiology of disease; and the mechanisms of treatment. Internal medicine requires a mastery of clinical skills in interviewing, physical examination, differential diagnosis, diagnostic testing strategies, therapeutic techniques, counseling and disease prevention.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

The general educational content of the program includes the neuromuscular component of diseases and the distinctive osteopathic concept of evaluating and treating the whole patient in an inpatient care and ambulatory care settings. You will develop basic cognitive skills and knowledge as pertaining to normal physiology and pathophysiology of the body systems and the correlating clinical applications of medical diagnosis and management.

The program offers an impatient and ambulatory experience in general internal medicine, specific medical subspecialties and elective pertinent training opportunities. The program also offers an opportunity throughout for exposure to issues which the resident will face as a practicing clinician, including health policy, managed care, health administration, medical ethics, medical liability and practice management.

We provide an opportunity for exposure in a supervised ambulatory site for continuity of care training. The resident will function, under appropriate supervision, as the patient’s primary care provider.
